Informed Christian: Armey's writing was a bit clumsy there, but I think that when he wrote, "Nowhere was it more wrong, with more disastrous policy ends, than in the Terri Schiavo intervention," he meant for "it" to refer to Focus on Family.

I find it interesting that in a letter that purports to show why Mr. Armey calls Dr. Dobson "a bully" he attacks "Washington, D.C.-based religious leaders". His first example relates how he found himself on the opposing side of a tax debate from Alabama Governor Bob Riley. He then says "We were blindsided when the national leadership of the Christian Coalition endorsed the Governor’s proposed tax increase". He further states "Today, the national Christian Coalition has joined forces with MoveOn.org in another government grab of private property". What is unsaid in this letter is that Christian Coalition was founded and is still controlled by Pat Roberson who is the Virgina Beach based founder of CBN.

How this example has anything to do with "Washington, D.C.-based religious leaders" or with Colorado based Dr. Dobson is left unsaid. This is nothing but an attempt to smear Dr. Dobson by implying he is somehow related to the incidents mentioned.

I can understand he was upset when Dr. Dobson reminded him that he accepted the support of many conservative Christians to get into power, but then once safely elected did little to promote their causes. To say this shows that Dr. Dobson who has never to my knowledge run for any office, is "most interested in political power" seems strange. It seems rather that Dick Armey who had one of the most powerful political positions in our country did not like crticism.

Mr. Armey says "Focus on the Family deliberately perpetuates the lie that I am a consultant to the ACLU". The sole reference to this I find on their website is:

"Focus on the Family Action President Jim Daly said it's shocking the former congressman would attack millions of values voters who helped Armey and other social conservatives gain control of Congress.

""Values voters expect to hear such cruel insults from the Left," he said, "but not from a champion of family values, as Mr. Armey once claimed to be."
Daly said there is "absolutely no doubt" that Dr. Dobson will continue to defend the family.

""Perhaps Mr. Armey should spend less time with the ACLU, for whom he is now a paid consultant," Daly said, "and more time apologizing to American families.""

I have no clue as to who is right on this issue. The defense Mr. Armey offers is interesting, however:

"I have never had any relationship with the ACLU and oppose most of that organization’s work. The ACLU has twisted “civil liberty” to mean something quite the opposite.

"Nowhere was it more wrong, with more disastrous policy ends, than in the Terri Schiavo intervention. While her case was heartbreaking, our Founders created a government built on checks and balances, not a nation run by an arbitrary and imperial Congress. Congress cannot simply override our entire state and federal legal system to intervene in one person’s situation. It was truly a chilling act."

This makes it sound as though the ACLU supported Terri Schiavo's right to life and the efforts in Congress to save her life. In fact, however, the ACLU opposed the efforts to save her life, and Mr. Armey sided with them.

I agree with Dick Armey about how we cannot have faith in this country without freedom. I, for one, know a few Christians who think this country should be a theocracy much like how John Calvin envisioned one. But I beleive freedom of religion is what makes this country separate from other countries.

The Liberal left can hardly wait to get control of Congress, the White House, and the Supreme court all at once to destroy our religious freedoms and make this country a Socialist Democracy like England, Germany, and France. These countries are mostly atheistic now.

As Christians, we know how it all ends: Christ wins, therefore, we win.

But while here, we are to do God's works that He has ordained for us to do. Christ never got involved in politics or Government while he was here. I feel we, as Christians, should not get invovled either. I love our President, but it has saddened me to see how he has had to compromise his beliefs while sitting as President. I pray for him daily. I believe that is something that all Christians have to do in order to hold office.

That is something Christ never did, nor Paul, nor Peter: Compromise God's Word. And it led to all their deaths for the Gospel.

I enjoy James Dobson's radio show, but I do cringe when he takes on political issues and urges Christians to do the same. I am invovled in the political theatre in that I listen to Conservative radio and read blogs to stay informed. But I ask for change from God through prayer, not through petitions or marches or boycotts. I have seen more change through answered prayers by the grace of God than any boycott or petition has ever caused.

Jeremiah 17:5-6

Thus says the LORD,
"Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind
         And makes flesh his strength,
And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
"For he will be like a bush in the desert
And will not see when prosperity comes,
But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,
A land of salt without inhabitant.

We are to trust in the Lord, not man.

Thanks for Dick Armey's letter and your post. I got me thinking...

Blessings,
